“Hey. Thank you so much for shipping forecast last night. I felt v giddy afterwards and still feel light and skippy today. It was brilliantly silly! I appreciate the efforts you put in and love your nonsense way of thinking! The headline poets were v cool too!”
Hello, The Shipping Forecast sails on.
Having firmly established ourselves at the Riverside pub in Sheffield, we now have our last run of shows before we pull up the anchor and set off on our summer holidays.
But we promise to leave you with some bona fide poetry wonderment over the next few months that you can long ponder over as you rub in the sun cream on the beach.
Having booked top names such as Byron Vincent, Luke Wright, Ross Sutherland, we continue in that rich vein to bring you the very best in Spoken word comedy across the UK with guest performances from the likes of the Thick Richard, Alabaster de Plume and Kris Foster, plus local poetical demi gods the charming and talented Matt Black and the fantastic Matt Mcteer and many more.
Plus in a slight change to the format we are now going to add 'The fish food slam', where poets compete for a paid 10 minute slot at the following month's Shipping forecast.
plus the usual blend of games, features, message in a bottle with Sting, Liam Gallagher’s book review, celebrity poetry corner and George the shark and of course the naff raffle all hosted by your indelible host Stan Skinny. Open mic slots are also available email [email protected]
Starting with
Thursday May 15th
Thick Richard
Matthew Duffy (Thick Richard) used to work with Bob Moyler who’s now off doing other things, although the two of them still co-operate on projects. Thick Richard has performed at the Edinburgh Fringe and the Glastonbury Festival as well as appearances on previous series of Bespoken Word.
Thick Richard will take you to the dark side with his tales of the seedy underbelly of life, delivered at breakneck pace.
With no mobile, email address or website, Thick Richard asks "If we don’t have anything on MySpace do we not exist?"
Matt Black
Matt Black is a writer and performer based in Sheffield. He writes poems (and occasionally fiction) for adults and children. He enjoys commissions and collaborations with other artists, and works in all sorts of places and situations, specialising in tailor-made projects that range from the serious and educational to the crazy and sublime

Matt McAteer
Matt McAteer started performing poetry at Sheffield's legendary Words Aloud night in 2007 and since then has taken shows to the Edinburgh Free Fringe, Buxton Fringe and Greater Manchester Fringe Festivals and performed at venues from London to Leeds. Whether taking a sideways glance at the recession, following the time travelling ghost of a Spanish Civil War volunteer or transporting Dadaist sound poetry to a contemporary warehouse setting, TS Eliot Prize nominee Helen Mort reckons his poetry is "a punch of fresh air - grounded in social history, written with flair and wit, performed with conviction. There's nobody else tackling the subjects he writes about so convincingly."
Things people have said about the forecast
It was a lovely, unexpected night full of ramshackley goodness, I think Tim and I both enjoyed it even more than we expected, and, for my part, that’s down to the effort you and your colleague put into the thing – you pour energy and charm in and the results show – I hope the night runs for a another four venues and many years…
